MID MICHIGAN RAILROAD CLUB, INC. ENJOYS DECADES
of 7-1/2” GAUGE RAILROADING
In 1985 a few train enthusiasts met at the Masonic Temple in Charlotte, MI. It was unanimous that there was enough interest to start a local 7-1/2” Gauge Railroading club named Mid-Michigan Railroad Club. Officers were elected and the word went out that we were seeking donated property to start building our Railroad. The construction started with a hand full of members on the property of Aluminum Extrusions Co. near downtown Charlotte. After operating for 1 year, the company closed its doors and we were forced to relocate. It wasn’t long before a club member, Wayne Karn, approached the Cornwell family at Turkeyville in Marshall, MI. The Cornwell family was excited and a contract was signed between the MMRC and Cornwell’s Turkeyville USA to install our Railroad. A master plan was developed and construction began. With donated equipment including a bulldozer from Wayne, tractors from Turkeyville, supplies from Morris Railroad Supplies and many helping hands, we were on our way to build the best darn railroad club you could want. We had people not interested in a membership who would come out for weeks and months just to help us build and bring their families out to watch the trains in service and run on the track that they helped build. Thank You to the wonderful people who helped build the story and history of the Mid-Michigan Railroad Club. MMRC has historically operated a passenger service operation, as of 2015 we have opened our facility to any visitors that wish to operate their equipment. We have installed passing sidings to facilitate simultaneous freight and passenger service, this adds the reality of full scale Railroading and provides an additional layer of operating interest and fun. Our Railroad currently contains over a mile of operating rails. We now have our first 53' long train storage container and another load/unload and transfer facility in service. Almost unlimited property availability provides us with the opportunity for mega expansion. The track expansion is currently in progress and our ultimate goal is to host Card Order Meets. This is a huge endeavor, we feel the expansion will add a new level of fun and interest to our Railroad. Full RV and Camping facilities are available at the Turkeyville campgrounds. For cost and availability, call the campgrounds at 269-781-4293, discount rates to fellow Railroaders will be offered. Turkeyville RV resort overlooks our Railroad and is a short walk to the Station. There is no charge for attending our Railroad, any donations are greatly appreciated. Our Club will be hosting the Discover Live Steam Convention in July, 2021, this is a large annual Convention with lots of trains and families from many States. Our current annual Family membership dues are $10.00 for the first year to new members and $25.00 per year thereafter. You do not need to own or operate a train to join our Club, we have many members who do not own or operate Railroad equipment. Mid Michigan Railroad club, Inc. membership is open to anyone that enjoys Railroading. Our Club is a 501c3 non-profit Organization and your donations may be tax deductible. The Grand Elk Railroad recently donated a full size Transfer Caboose to our Club. The Caboose is now in place next to our Passenger Service Station and we are in the process of restoring it and will repurpose the interior to include a glimpse of Railroad history.
